Summary
The booklet was printed in the spring of 2024 and is a companion to the documentary "Construction workers our heroic comrades", which deals with the struggles of the construction workers' movement during the period 1950-1967.
It was made available with a free financial contribution during the screenings of the documentary in various regions of Greece.
Presentation
In the aftermath of the Greek Civil War the popular movement was on a path of reconstruction but still in a fighting position. Contrary to what the bourgeois bloc had expected, the victory achieved by the government army and the American intervention against the Democratic Army of Greece (DSE) did not put a tombstone on the class struggle of the post-civil war era.
Against this background and while the left movement was steadily on the rise, even gaining legal political representation with the establishment of the EDA in August 1951, the construction sector in Athens, as the pre-eminent field for the deployment of bourgeois reconstruction plan, would be transformed into a field of fierce class conflict. A conflict that matured slowly, steadily but persistently under enormous difficulties, to provide a peak moment of the class struggle 10 years after: the historic construction workers' strike of December 1960. A struggle that, with inspiration, content and momentum, would in turn fuel the labor movement of the period that followed.
